Northern Cardinal

Northern Cardinal
The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is a medium-sized songbird found throughout North America. Males have a bright red plumage with a black mask on their face, while females have a more subdued reddish-brown coloring with hints of red on their wings and tail. They have a short, thick, cone-shaped bill that is adapted for cracking open seeds and fruits. Northern Cardinals are common in woodlands, gardens, and suburban areas and are known for their sweet, whistling songs, which can be heard throughout the year. They are monogamous birds and can often be seen in pairs, and they are also territorial and will defend their territory from other birds. Northern Cardinals are a popular sight at bird feeders, where they feed on sunflower seeds and other small seeds. They are one of the most iconic and recognizable birds in North America and are considered a state bird in seven U.S. states.
